And a new music post by Ruddy Adam.
Two Outstanding Cover Songs by Joan Osborne, and Two Blues Songs by the Great One Herself, Janis Joplin
Cover songs rarely do the originals justice, but JO puts the originals out of your mind with these. She’s the only one with a shot at becoming another Janis. But on second thought, there is no, nor can there be another Janis. Nobody has the voice; forget about the passion. Once in a musical eon does a Janis come along.
These are good, though, especially as covers go.
“Shake Your Hips” Joan Osborne
“What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” Joan Osborne
Janis is her usual self. She pours every hair, every cell, every thing she has into “Kosmic Blues.” That’s a given.

“What Good Can Drinkin’ Do?” is a perfect example of JJ’s life. It’s from 1962 long before she was a known entity, much less a star. Those of you who listen to a lot of music can certainly hear the potential in that magnificent voice. The raspy vigor is already there, and the passion is barely latent.
The pitiful thing about “What Good Can Drinkin’ Do?” is, the destructive personality is already there, clearly recognizable by her tone and especially the lyrics. I suppose no one heard it back then. But it is there, the runner from problems, the runner who can’t face the world, and chooses to hide by getting drunk out of her mind, by drinking at this time, and later by heroin.
Listen to that Texas twang that, very, very sadly, she worked all her life to hide. JJ’s cultic Khristian past haunted her because she could never do enough to please the bastards, and so, they ran another precious child right into the depths of satanic squalor, where the poor soul died. Thank the Lord though for her piano and voice teacher, who was her church choir director when she was a child.
Never fear, though!!! The Lord ain’t no kultic Khristian. He has an insurmountable depth of love and mercy for His people, and will show it to them, as He’s doing right now (for those who can see it). See you soon, Janis!
